1. Will I be unconscious or unable to respond if something happens?

Hypnosis is actually a state of increased focus and concentration. It can be likened to a very relaxed state where you hone in on the thing you are dealing with. You are always aware of your surroundings and should you need to stop, to alert the hypnotherapist or come out of that state you can do so easily.

  1. Will I do silly things? Can I be made to do things?

Therapeutic hypnosis is very different to what we see on movies or in stage shows. During clinical hypnosis all you need to do is listen to receive the benefits of the programme. There is no physicality involved at all. If you want to readjust your body or shift position you can do so without any impact on the hypnotic process.

  1. Will I reveal secrets about myself that I don’t want others to know?

Not at all. You are always in complete control during the session and the therapist works hard to ensure that you feel comfortable and that your privacy will always be respected. During hypnosis we ask the client often if they are comfortable to continue, or would they like to just process a new insight in their own time. Hypnosis is an extremely private and personal experience. The client must always be comfortable feeling relaxed and respected. Sometimes clients may be surprised about what is really going on for them but this is more a valuable insight.

  1. Is hypnosis unscientific?

Hypnosis has been accepted and endorsed by the American Medical Association, the American Dental Association (it has been used successfully for extractions in place of anaesthetic as well as relaxing those patients with phobias about the dentist), American Psychological Association, the HPCSA has a registration for Clinical Hypnosis for their members who are already Psychologists. There are numerous prestigious organisations throughout the world who endorse hypnosis. There has also been extensive research conducted on Hypnosis and its effects and efficacy.

5. How effective is hypnosis? 

Correctly applied hypnosis is very effective. It is partially due to the knowledge and experience of the therapist and partially due to the commitment of the client. Once we have successfully established what is driving unwanted behaviour it is a great and worthwhile tool and many clients are extremely pleased with the results. Results are always best when the client is motivated and committed to change.

6. What if I remember something I have blocked out or some trauma and can’t cope with this? 

Your subconscious mind has incredible ways of protecting you and often clients are surprised by how mundane the “big thing” they think is causing the unwanted behaviour or emotions. Hypnotherapists are skilled in various techniques to help clients process the insights occurring while the client is in hypnosis.
